Monmouth Junction, NJ June 15, 2007 - Kristen Marie Lew of East Windsor has recently been
selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the New Jersey Credit Union League’s Youth Involvement
Board. Ms. Lew was sponsored by NJ Gateway Federal Credit Union, of which she is a member in good
standing.
Her selection was based on academic performance as well as an essay which accompanied her
application. Ms. Lew, a senior at Hightstown High School, is ranked fourth in her class and achieved
a perfect score of 800 on her math SATs. She anticipates attending Rutgers University, New
Brunswick.
In her essay on the importance of a national financial literacy initiative, Ms. Lew states, "If
today’s students, our future leaders, are not financially literate, no hope exists for our future
economy." The National Honors Society inductee lists her 3-part proposal, which includes: 1.)
Educating students about their own personal finances, 2.) State-mandating schools to include topics
of finance in the curriculum, and 3.) Getting community organizations involved in financial literacy
endeavors. "I believe financial literacy can be spread throughout a community, a city, a state, and
finally, a nation," she says.
